歌舞伎 — Kabuki by Keisuke Watanabe at Plastico Gallery

This exhibition presents a seven-metre-long ink work inspired by Schubert’s song Nacht und Träume (Night and Dreams), alongside a new series of nudes drawn improvisationally, and landscape works that capture the atmosphere and movement of the places in which they were created.

Cat and woman by Keisuke Watanabe at Plastico Gallery

猫と女 — Cat and woman by Keisuke Watanabe at Plastico Gallery

Drawing on the physical and sensory awareness developed through his practice as a flautist, Watanabe works primarily with ink while exploring a wide range of materials and techniques.

At the heart of his practice is a distinctive approach he describes as “drawing as if listening.”

Through depictions of bodies of different ages and genders, as well as ever-changing landscapes, his work asks: What is the body? What is a dream? What does it mean to see?

Themes of solitude, prayer and the memory of place resonate through the lines of ink and the empty spaces surrounding them.

In Adelaide, Australia, and Avignon, France, he exhibited a 100-metre-long work depicting the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Invited by choreographer Pina Bausch, he spent one month in Wuppertal, Germany, drawing rehearsals.
